Community Spotlight: JDdotST

Welcome to the twelfth installment of the Pipeline Community Spotlight! Each week, we’ll be highlighting a member of the community and their story in an effort to share learnings among each other and bring everyone closer together even in these trying times.

Meet JDdotST, a Twitch variety streamer from the US who is a man of many hats. He describes himself as a “a husband, musician, entrepreneur and “The #5 Ranked NA Just Chatting Streamer on Twitch”. That’s a lot — and if you’ve ever seen him around on the Pipeline Discord, you know just how much of a friendly personality he is!

Earlier this week, we talked with him to learn more about his story — how he got into gaming, how he started streaming, as well as what he has planned for the future. Here’s what he had to say!

How did you get into gaming?

I have been a gamer since my dad brought home an IBM 80286 in 1982. I grew up on Flight Simulator and Ultima and later TieFighter and DarkForces and WOW on PC and of course Mario and Zelda and Contra on the NES and then later Perfect Dark and Golden Eye on the 64 and in highschool into the Halo era…My childhood was acting and videogames and music and I am seeing things in gaming now that 10 year old JD only dreamed about. The next few years in gaming will simply be incredible.

How did your streaming journey start?

As a former actor and musician and audio engineer I already felt that I had many of the baseline skills one would want to have, but honestly I never really believed in myself enough to take the risk and go for it.  At the start of 2020 I was forced to shut down my AV installation business that I started almost a decade ago due to COVID and after a ton of thought and lots of conversations Mrs JD and I decided to make the sacrifices and put the work in to go full time with streaming and build a positive and hope filled community.

What are some of the most memorable milestones/achievements of your streaming career?

We are starting our 4th month of streaming, we achieved Twitch Affiliate in 45 days, We achieved over 100 subs on our first affiliate stream, grew to 250+ subs in our first month; we have been blessed with some huge raid –including a SethDrums Raid of 250 people and one of 100 from the pipeline legend IronSmithy and doing this spotlight for pipeline is HUGE to me in terms of milestones!

But really it has been the people every day that send me and my mods DMs with their stories of how they are grateful for hope and encouragement and even a little joy and that they needed a place to be themselves and be accepted and that they are believing their future can be better than today….that’s the real achievement.

The fact that anything I am saying or doing can help anyone have the courage to go believe in themselves and try to achieve their dreams is the biggest honor.

On the topic of memorable, what about challenges?

Any and Everything tech related can and probably will be a challenge, even if you are a great techie, even if it was working yesterday…sometimes stuff just does not work right.  Rolling with the challenges and being flexible and able to pivot without getting thrown off when something isn’t working right are really great skills to develop early.

What do you wish you knew when you were starting out as a streamer that you want new ones to know?

I started Pipeline and read the first half of the Playbook before going live, and finished the playbook in the first week….so for me there honestly hasn’t been anything I was unprepared for, because it’s literally ALL IN THE PLAYBOOK!   Actually RTFP and READ THE FLIPPING PLAYBOOK and then take advantage of the Discord and the amazing community here; if you are willing to listen and put the work in and not give up there is absolutely no reason you will not succeed.

What motivates you to keep streaming? Is this something you see doing for a long while?

Really we all need a cheerleader, a positive influence, a coach or a mentor, someone in our ear telling us we can do this, and I am really motivated by the fact that what I am doing on stream is actually making a difference in people’s everyday lives and helping them. In many ways what Pipeline does for the streaming community, I have the honor of doing for the amazing folks in the dotFAM.  Every weekday at 10 and 12 and 2 ET I have the honor to encourage, uplift and inspire people and it really is the most fulfilling and joyful thing to see them start to believe in themselves!

I am fully committed and invested in the community we have built and to the other amazing content creators that come and get their pep talk for the day. This is currently my full time vocation, and I don’t plan on going anywhere.

We have hope and joy and positive vibes to spread and a world to change for the better.

What defines you as a content creator? What do you think sets you apart from other streamers?

My main goal is to be uplifting and motivational and to foster a community in chat and our discord that genuinely feels safe and free for people to be the best versions of themselves.  I’m not here to blow smoke and spout platitudes, I really have seen an amazing change in my own life as a result of trying to beBetter and positive and hopeful…the world looks much better thru a lens of hope, and I am excited to continue to share that with others and to see their lives transform!

What are your goals for the future?

Our goal for this year is to hit 1000 subscribers on Twitch and we are ⅓ of the way there so it looks pretty possible to me, my second goal is to become a Pipeline affiliate.

Long term we believe we can change the world for the better by having more compassion and understanding for others, and by simply believing that our best days are ahead of us and not behind us.

Know that you have an amazing purpose, you are so valuable and when you realize it you become so extremely powerful.  You really can change the world.

Any shoutouts you’d like to do?

The folks most deserving shoutout would be Bird and Justin and Bani and all of the Staff at pipeline.  This is a fantastic community and I am consistently humbled by the kindness and acceptance that I have been shown from everyone here!  Thank you so much.

I also am so grateful for all of the amazing pipelineFAM that keep coming and getting filled with hope and hype before going to do their streams and serving their communities, its a real honor to have so many of you spend time with me and raid me and host me and tweet about the stream and I am just so excited to see you all achieve your dreams and goals.  I see anyone from pipeline winning and I feel like I am winning too!   Lets go change the world!
